More Tips on How to Clean Roller Blinds

20th Sep 2017

We wrote an article last year about how to clean your roller blinds, but many of our customers have been asking us for more tips on how to keep their roller blinds from Quickfit looking and working their best. So here are some more of our favourite tips for getting your roller blinds clean! If you put any of our tips to work, we'd love to see your before and after photos.

Weekly Cleaning For Your Roller Blinds

Your roller blinds shouldn't require much maintenance over the years, but some weekly attention should help them last even longer. Once a week, extend your roller blinds almost the entire way. Wipe down both sides of the material with a damp cloth. This will help remove any dust, dirt, or debris that's collected on the surface in the last week. Getting that cleared away will prevent the material of the roller blinds from breaking down sooner than it should.

*Bonus tip! Don't forget to clean around your roller blinds, too, including in the window casing. That debris could harm your blinds, too, so keeping the area around the blinds will help them last longer, too.

Deep Cleaning Your Roller Blinds

You might want to consider deep cleaning your roller blinds on an annual basis as well. This is especially important for households that have pets or members who suffer from severe allergies. Make your annual roller blind cleaning part of your spring cleaning routine and you'll have blinds that hold up for years and years!

For a deep cleaning, we recommend removing the roller blinds from their window brackets. Most brackets have a flip-up cover that you'll simply lift up and then remove the roller blinds from the casing. Evaluate whether or not your roller blinds can be submerged in water.

If your blinds can be wet...

  • Run a bathtub full of warm, soapy water (use a mild laundry detergent)
  • Gently unwind your blinds a little bit so the material is loose on the roll
  • Submerge each roller blind in the water completely
  • Let your roller blinds soak
  • Examine the front and back of each blind for spots and stains and gently scrub with a stain remover
  • Drain the bathtub and replace the water with fresh, clean water to rinse the blinds
  • Make sure you get all of the soap out of the material (your shower's sprayer head can be helpful here!)
  • Lay the clean blinds on a drying rack or outside across a couple chairs to completely dry
  • Re-roll the blinds when they are completely dry; damp blinds could cause mold or mildew to form!
  • Hang the blinds back in the brackets and secure them in place

*Bonus tip! If your roller blinds are white, you can add a little bleach to the bathtub to help brighten them.

If you can't submerge the material...

  • Remove the blinds from the window brackets as described above.
  • Find a space where you can unroll of of the roller blinds or at least a large section at a time
  • Use a damp cloth and a stain remover to go over the length of your curtains, moving the cloth back and forth across the surface.
  • Allow the roller blinds to completely dry before you reroll them, or you could risk mold and mildew developing.
  • Rehang your fresh clean roller blinds back in the window bracket and secure

*Bonus tip! Make sure you check the manufacturer's instructions on how to clean your roller blinds. There are some that cannot be submerged because it will weaken the glue that binds that material to the roll at the top.
