We've worked with many home decorators over the years and learned their tricks to making a space look more expensive without breaking their decorating budget. Here are some of our favourite tips to make your room look expensive without actually being expensive. See if there are any tips that you can put to work in your space!
How to Make Your Space Look More Expensive
Spend more where it matters.
Every items in your room doesn't have to come from luxury sources. However, it can do a lot for your space if there are one or two key items that you spend a little extra on. Items like luxury blankets, rugs, and side chairs can be key elements in your room that can elevate the rest of the space. If you find one of these items that you love and want to build your room around them, it's okay to spend a little extra on the piece then find other areas where you can budget a little less. Another great item to spend a little more on is your wall art; maybe you want to support an up-and-coming artist or just have a favourite piece that would be perfect for your lounge room. Buying quality art not only sets your space apart, but originals could actually appreciate in value over time, too!
Purchase custom curtains.
Buying custom curtains will do a lot to make your space look more expensive. There is nothing that will make a room look cheaper faster than curtains that are too small or hung incorrectly. It's one of the most obvious signs that it was designed on a budget. The truth is you can get custom curtains for not much more than you'd spend on off-the-shelf curtains and they'll look ten times better in your windows. That's because you are sure to get the length and the fullness that you need in your windows, making them look larger and the space look more magnificent. Custom curtains are available in a huge range of styles and fabrics, too, so you can get exactly what you need for every window in your room.
Buy a rug that's big enough for the room.
This is another area that is the wrong place to look to save money. Many people think that they'll save money on their decorating by buying a rug that's the next size down. Sure, you'll save money, but you'll end up making your room look cheap. Purchase a rug that's large enough to fill the space, or at least allow the front legs of each piece of furniture in the space to rest on the rug. That's the minimum size you'll need. If you can't afford something that's big enough for the space, you can strategically use smaller rugs in the space. Center one under your coffee table or use a runner in front of your entertainment cabinet. This will add interest to the space but won't make it look cheap.
Add lots of texture to the space.
One of the best ways to add a lot of richness to your space is to add a variety of textures. Consider adding velvet pillows to your couch, a fur throw on the back of a chair, or a fluffy rug to your floors. You can keep all of your textures to the same colour scheme or tie it together with a cohesive pattern or theme. Contrast your textures when possible; for instance, add a fluffy blanket to the back of a leather couch, or add muslin pillows to a velvet armchair. Textures not only make the space look more expensive, they can help the room feel cosier, too. You'll love snuggling into the sofa and curling up under a soft blanket!
Pull your inspiration from expensive sources.
If you aren't sure where to start, pick up a copy of the latest home decorating magazine. There is a good chance that the items in the magazine are going to be beyond your budget, but use them as a starting place for your inspiration. Cut out images that you like and arrange them on a board. When you start to shop for your space, looking for items that mimic the look and feel of the pictures on your board. For instance, maybe the picture of the room you love uses a very expensive antler chandelier. Instead, you can mimic the look and feel of that chandelier with some wooden lighting fixtures. You'll end up with a look-alike space that costs far less.
