Venetian Blinds vs Roller Blinds: Which Are Right For Your Windows?

Posted by Emily Wang on 6th Apr 2023

When it comes to blinds, there are two main categories: Venetian and rollers. They both have their pros and cons, so you'll need to carefully weight them when considering which is right for your windows. We've helped thousands of our customers find the right window treatments for the windows in their homes and offices, so we know how tough the decision can be. Here are some things to consider when you go to make your purchase.

Should You Pick Roller or Venetian Blinds?

Which are easier to clean?

Both are pretty easy to clean. Roller blinds can be wiped down with a damp cloth; so can Venetian blinds, but you'll have to wipe off every individual slat and that can be much more time consuming. Both can be put into a bathtub with warm, soapy water for a deep cleaning, but you'll need to be careful that you don't loosen the glue that's adhering the roller blinds to the roller.

Which cost more?

This depends on a lot of factors, including how much you need, what sizes, and what kind of quality you want to pay for. Both Venetian and roller blinds can be found in a huge array of sizes and styles as well as in a vast range of prices. You'll pay for what you get when it comes to quality, so you can choose whether you want well-made blinds that will last for years or if you'd rather have blinds that are inexpensive and fit within your budget. You'll find both options for blinds online.

Which are better for privacy?

Venetian blinds almost win here. That's because you can tailor the amount of light that's coming through the blinds by adjusting the slats; and likewise, adjust how much privacy you get. With traditional roller blinds, you either get all or nothing when you open or close your blinds. However, newer roller blind options combine blockout panels with sunscreen panels. These provide the best of both world. Sunscreen panels allow for some natural light to enter the room but still provide a strong degree of privacy. And when you are ready to shut the world out, pulling down the blockout panel will do the trick.

Which have more colour options?

You'll be able to find both options in a big variety of colours, however, it will be harder to find Venetian blinds in bold colours. Most Venetian blinds come in wood tones and neutrals like white. Roller blinds are easy to find in a huge variety of colours, such as reds, blues, greys, greens, and more. That makes them a stronger statement piece for your window, too.

Which last longer?

It will depend on how you care for them. The material that's used to make roller blinds is very durable, and with proper care should last for years. Many Venetian blinds are made with high quality materials as well, however, the main problem with them are the slats. If one of your slats breaks, you may be able to find a replacement. If you can't, though, you'll have to replace the entire set. That can add up quickly, especially in a home with pets or children. But with good maintenance and care, either blinds should last for many years before they need to be replaced.

So Which One is Right For Your Home?

It comes down to this: pick the blinds that you prefer! Some people love the traditional look of Venetian blinds and enjoy the slatted look in their windows. Others prefer the clean cut look of roller blinds and the wider range of colours and styles. You should get the ones that you prefer! You'll be able to find similar quality products at similar prices.
